These Are the Best Dive Spots on Bonaire

Diving on Bonaire is an unforgettable experience. The island is one of the top destinations in the world to explore the underwater world. Whether you're looking to admire colorful fish, unique coral formations, or even shipwrecks, Bonaire has it all. Windhoek Boutique Resort Bonaire is located near some of the best dive sites on the island. We can help you rent dive gear, or you can bring your own equipment. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced diver, Bonaire is the perfect place to take the plunge into your next adventure.

Start Your Bonaire Dive Trip at Karpata

One of Bonaire’s most popular dive sites is Karpata, located in the northern part of the island. This spot offers everything you could hope for—vibrant, healthy coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life. The easy shore entry makes it an excellent dive site for beginners. Experienced divers shouldn’t miss the chance to descend along the deep grooves and vertical walls of Karpata. These steep drop-offs create spectacular views, so don’t forget your underwater camera. Good to know: Karpata has no facilities such as restrooms or restaurants, so be sure to bring enough food and water for your adventure.

Dive Into the Sea at 1000 Steps

Not far from Karpata is another stunning dive location: 1000 Steps. The name refers to the staircase leading down to the water, though in reality, there are only 67 steps. Once you enter the calm, crystal-clear waters, you’ll be greeted by colorful corals and diverse fish species. This site is also a prime location for spotting sea turtles, and if you’re lucky, you might even see a seahorse. With depths ranging from 9 to 30 meters, 1000 Steps is ideal for both beginners and experienced divers. The beach is easily accessible by car, and after your dive, you can relax on the coral shore. There are a few shaded spots, but they fill up quickly, so get there early if you want a cool place to unwind.

For Advanced Divers: The Hilma Hooker Shipwreck

While most dive trips to Bonaire focus on the island’s incredible marine life, there’s more to explore beneath the surface. If you’re an experienced diver, a visit to the Hilma Hooker shipwreck is a must. The ship gained notoriety in 1984 when authorities discovered 10,000 kilos of marijuana hidden within its double hull. Before investigations into its origins could begin, the ship mysteriously sank to the ocean floor. Today, the Hilma Hooker is covered in coral and sponges, creating a one-of-a-kind dive experience. Unlike many wrecks, the ship was never stripped, allowing divers to admire it in its original, mysterious state. Important: To enter the wreck, you must have an Advanced Open Water certification. Never dive alone—always bring a buddy or book a guided excursion. For more details on wreck diving trips, visit the Windhoek Bonaire reception to explore your options.
