Washington Slagbaai Park Bonaire:

A Haven for Nature Lovers and Adventurers

A visit to Washington Slagbaai Park is a must for anyone traveling to Bonaire. Located on the north side of the island, this 5,643-hectare national park is the perfect destination for a day trip. Whether you enjoy birdwatching, snorkeling, hiking, or mountain biking, Washington Slagbaai Park has something for everyone. To fully explore the park, we recommend renting a car, which you can easily do through our own car rental service. From our boutique resort Windhoek Bonaire in Kralendijk, it takes about 30 minutes to reach the park entrance. Once inside, you can choose between two scenic routes: The yellow route (35 km), which follows the coastline. The green route (24 km), which takes you through the island’s interior.

Snorkeling in Slagbaai Park Bonaire

One of Bonaire’s best snorkeling spots is Wayaka Beach, named after the Wayaka lignum vitae trees that grow abundantly in the area. There are three beaches in total, but we highly recommend heading to Wayaka 2. This public sandy beach is perfect for snorkelers of all levels. To reach the beach, you’ll descend a stone staircase, and once in the water, you’ll find yourself in an entirely different world. The shallow waters are home to stunning coral reefs, colorful fish, and even sea turtles. If Wayaka 2 is busy, you can also visit Boka Slagbaai, where you’ll find not only great snorkeling opportunities but also historical remnants of the former plantation that once stood here.

A Paradise for Birdwatchers

Washington Slagbaai Park features a diverse range of ecosystems, including dry forests with cacti and divi-divi trees, mangroves, salt flats, freshwater ponds, and a long coastline—making it a paradise for birdwatchers. This is one of the best places on Bonaire to spot flamingos, parrots, and wild parakeets. Even if you don’t see them, you’ll certainly hear them, as the park is a favorite breeding ground for songbirds such as the troupial and sugar thief. For the best birdwatching spots, head to Pos Mangel and Put Bronswinkel. If you want to see flamingos, visit one of the salt lakes early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the birds are most active. Be mindful of their habitat and avoid disturbing them. For the ultimate experience, consider booking a guided tour.

Tips for an Unforgettable Day in Slagbaai Park Bonaire

To enter Washington Slagbaai Park, visitors must purchase a Nature Fee. This entry ticket grants you access to the park and helps fund its preservation. The Nature Fee is valid throughout Bonaire, including other protected nature reserves on the island. You can purchase it online via the Bonaire National Parks Foundation (STINAPA) website. Since there are no facilities in the park, be sure to bring plenty of food and water. Additionally, leave no trash behind to help keep the park pristine. Finally, before heading in, check at the entrance for any special conditions or park updates to ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit.
